Elias had felt his eyes starting to glaze over as Abby and Adela’s discussion progressed—not surprising given the topic had centered on sewing and what-have-you. However, Adela’s last remark had snapped him out of his stupor and back to attention right quick.

He straightened in his chair. “It isn’t safe for Abby to be all on her own, away from the cabin, without any means of protection. Especially not for the whole of the afternoon. Josiah mentioned to me that he’s spotted signs of a mountain lion prowling around the ranch over the past few weeks.”

Abby gasped, her eyes widening in alarm. “Mattie must be terrified. I hope she and Josiah are sticking close to the cabin to stay safe. Has he seen the animal during the day?”

“They’re both fine,” he assured her. “Josiah’s alert to the danger, but he didn’t seem overly worried by it, other than the risk it poses to his horses. He hasn’t actually seen the mountain lion at all. Only its tracks. But make no mistake—that’s no guarantee you won’t encounter an angry cat, even in the daylight hours. Although I’ll admit the chances are slim.” Elias added the last, not wishing to frighten Abby out of her wits.

He should have worried more about the opposite, he realized, as resolve firmed her expression. “I’m sure I’ll be fine, then,” she said.

He met her intent gaze head-on. “So am I, because you’re not going alone. I’ll be coming with you to make certain of it.” He wouldn’t back down on that.

Abby’s lashes lowered as she glanced at the baby in her arms. “What about Emma? Who will look after her while you and I are gone? You’re not thinking of leaving her with Mother, are you?”

“No. We’ll take Emma with us.”

Abby’s eyes returned to his, her delicate eyebrows pulling together. “Aren’t you concerned for her safety with a rogue mountain lion roaming the area?”

“Of course. That’s why we’ll have to stay within shouting distance of Josiah’s cabin, and I’ll bring my rifle along as an added precaution. I don’t expect to run into any trouble. Still, it’s wise to be prepared for any eventuality, just in case.”

The thought of anything happening to his daughter, or to Abby, was like a hot poker to his innards. He vowed to remain vigilant, ensuring no harm came to either one of them.
